Sure, there are artists I hate- but I don't see the point in going out of my way to make sure everyone knows it. Whilst surfing the net there are many nasty things I've read about Mariah that need clearing up... "SHE DOESN'T WRITE HER OWN MATERIAL": What!? She co-wrote 11 out of 12 songs from her Butterfly album, as she also did with Daydream. Mariah is such a talented writer, yet many critics fail to recognise she does write her own lyrics. Surely she deserves credit here... "SHE FLAUNTS HER BODY TO SELL RECORDS...": Alright, Mariah's shedded the old clothes and has a sexy new-look. But does that really sell? I find Mariah is the sexiest woman alive, but I buy albums for their worth...not if a woman on the cover had nice breasts. If Elle McPherson released a techno version of "Candle In The Wind"- do you think it would sell just cuz she's a babe? I think not. "SHE'S RACIST AND HATES GAYS...": These are spiteful, hurtful rumours. Mariah comes from a mixed race family, why would she display racism after being a victim? It's ridiculous. And rumours that Mariah is homophobic make me laugh, considering she toured with 2 gay guys proves she not homophobic. What will people think of next - MARIAH THE NAZI? *** IDIOTS ON THE NET *** Remember that god-awful site "I Hate Mariah Carey"? It was full of foul and mean things about Mariah Carey. Me and my friend Claire (HI CLAIRE!!!) had it banned from the net- only for the idiot to start it up again. As Mariah fans, I think it's up to us to have this site removed again. Visit the site and complain to the web-host. Help Mariah! EMAIL COMMENTS: daydream@sci.net.au (C) 1998. CJW PRODUCTIONS Unauthorised copying is prohibited. *****= Sent from up Above **** = One Sweet Song! *** = A nice vision ** = Vanishing * = & You Don't Remember It! Mariah Carey (1990) 1.VISION OF LOVE: This slow-tempo song was Mariah's first venture into the charts and it wasn't a suprise it was so successful. Vision Of Love is a timeless mix of blues and pop, a delightfully swingin' melody and rich additional vocals from Trey Lorenz make this an unforgettable, sweet classic. ***** 2.THERE'S GOT TO BE A WAY: Mariah's social plea for a better world makes this stirring song an above average song. Although the chorus never really takes off, it's lyrics and the raw power of Mariah's voice is stunning all the same. *** 3.I DON'T WANNA CRY: An emotional ballad that shows Mariah's wonderful, rich voice. Once again, Mariah Carey has written purely beautiful lyrics. **** 4.SOMEDAY: One of the best, upbeat tracks on this album. The words in this song are ones we all can relate to and a change of pace demonstrates yet more strengths into Mariah's voice. ***** 5.VANISHING: A remarkable ballad that could be the most acclaimed track on this album. A little slow tempo (especially after Someday), Mariah once again shines. **** 6.ALL IN YOUR MIND: What can one say about this song? It is one of my favourites, the chorus is as catchy as hell and Mariah's famous high-pitched tone at the end (You know what I'm talking about if you listen to this song!) is unlike anything I've ever heard. People may call her high-pitched tone a commercial gimmick- but I call it a gift, and Mariah uses it well. **** 7.ALONE IN LOVE: Every Mariah song is great, but this (although still great) falls into the "It's a neat song- but not her best" category. However, it's strangely enchanting and Mariah sounds great. *** 8.YOU NEED ME: This falls into the same category as Alone In Love, although it's a good song- she's done better and this sounds a lot like a B-side track. ** 1/2 9.SENT FROM UP ABOVE: A catchy tune and a groovy chorus deliver an above average track from Mariah's debut album. *** 10.PRISONER: The fastest song on the album sees Mariah doing what her fans call "The famous rap solo" (but she's really just talking). This is a catchy, hard-to-forget track and it's always nice to see Mariah changing the pace a little. This is classic Mariah. *** 1/2 11.LOVE TAKES TIME: One of Mariah's most acclaimed tracks, this is definately the gem of Mariah's first album. This was her first outing with producer Walter Afanasieff and boy did he bring out the best in her! This was an added track, her debut album was originally planned to have only 10 tracks. ***** OVERALL:Mariah's debut could be seen as overly -produced and commercialised, her "true" style was never shown as it has in her recent music. However, she really does have some stunning tracks on this album and it will always be a classic. MTV Unplugged EP (1992) 1.EMOTIONS *** 2.IF IT'S OVER *** 3.SOMEDAY **** 4.VISION OF LOVE This is a fantastic version of Mariah's very first single. **** 1/2 5.MAKE IT HAPPEN **** 6.I'LL BE THERE Mariah's #1 duet with stunning singer Trey Lorenz is a fantastic cover of the Jackson 5's original hit. Mariah and Trey sing beautifully together- I think this version is much better than the one Mariah sang with Wanya Morris (Boyz II Men) at Madison Square Garden in 1995. ***** 7.CAN'T LET GO **** 1/2 OVERALL: This live version is very good, with only acoustic instruments used- the songs were broken down to a raw (and often beautiful) version. A more personal album (would have been better with 10 or more songs, instead of 7). Music Box (1993) 1.DREAMLOVER: The opening track is a sensational blend of pop and that sweet Mariah voice that we all love. Another feel good song that took the ingredients from the single Emotions and added more fun. This was a huge hit around the world. **** 2.HERO: A stunning ballad with a strong theme. Mariah delivers a powerfil chorus with the simple, but beautiful, piano in the background. A #1 Mariah classic, "Hero" is unforgettable. ***** 3.ANYTIME YOU NEED A FRIEND: A gospel edge and some powerful background vocalists make this song above average. Mariah's voice sounds great, again. *** 1/2 4.MUSIC BOX: This simply beautiful title track is full of delightful lyrics and the power and beauty of Mariah's voice is used to carry the song- which she does with pure style. **** 5.NOW THAT I KNOW: A very catchy tune, popular in dance clubs- but not with critics. However, she does know how to sing a dance song and the beat is hard not to groove to! *** 6.NEVER FORGET YOU: Mariah's first collaboration with R&B superstar producer Babyface was a great career move and the result was a wonderful ballad, somewhat overshadowed by Without You. **** 7.WITHOUT YOU: One word describes Mariah's cover of this classic ballad: powerful. ***** 8.JUST TO HOLD YOU ONCE AGAIN: What may have sounded like a B-side to critics proved to be a touching, stirring ballad for Mariah fans. *** 9.I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT YOU: Very similar in style to "Now That I Know", this has a catchy beat that spreads like the plague and the song really sticks in your head. Not one of her best efforts, but the nice lyrics make up for it. ** 1/2 10. ALL I'VE EVER WANTED: One of my favourites, this is a stunning ballad that's got power and pure emotion. The lyrics are easy to relate to for those who've been in love (haven't we all?) and this is trully a great song... I think it could have been a single. **** 1/2 11.EVERYTHING FADES AWAY: A nice ballad that finishes MUSIC BOX with style. **** OVERALL: Mariah's album MUSIC BOX has so many great tracks on it, it's no wonder it was such a huge success. However, like her debut, it didn't seem to be the REAL Mariah- she didn't seem to explore as much into her own style as she had done with Emotions. However, this is a superb album.
